Raven Rock: The Rosetta Stone of Underground Military Bases

The satellite image captures what the Department of Defense calls Site R — the Raven Rock Mountain Complex in Adams County, Pennsylvania, six miles north of Camp David. Carved into a greenstone ridge during the early Cold War, the facility was designed as an alternate Pentagon: a self-contained underground command center capable of sustaining military operations after a nuclear strike destroyed Washington. The surface reveals only a few access roads, communications arrays, and hardened entry portals cut into the mountainside. Everything else is inside the granite.
Construction began in 1951 using conventional drill-and-blast techniques that hollowed out approximately 265,000 square feet of operational space within the mountain. Five building-sized caverns, each three stories tall, sit on massive spring-mounted platforms designed to absorb the shock of a near-miss nuclear detonation. The facility maintains its own power plant, water treatment system, medical clinic, dining halls, and communications infrastructure connecting it to every node in the national command authority. It is, functionally, an underground city with a population capacity classified since its construction.
Raven Rock is the Rosetta Stone of the DUMB network because it is the one facility the government has partially acknowledged. Its existence proves the engineering capability. Its expansion — documented through satellite imagery showing new construction as recently as 2015 — proves the program never ended. And its proximity to Camp David proves that every president since Truman has known exactly what lives inside these mountains. Raven Rock is not a secret. It is a confession.
